Catalyst (SBIR Assistance)

What is the Columbia Catalyst Program?

Columbia Catalyst is a special program to assist Columbia inventors who wish to pursue an SBIR or STTR grant in order to further advance inventions being developed at Columbia.   The objective is to increase the probability of receiving SBIR funding in order to reduce the technical risks associated with inventions and to increase the chances of receiving follow-on investment for commercialization.

What are SBIRs and STTRs grants?

SBIR and STTR grants are awarded by certain agencies of the Federal government to promote the commercialization of early-stage technology by small companies.  These competitive grants provide entrepreneurs and small businesses with critical funding to demonstrate the technical feasibility and commercial viability of novel technologies.  More information about the SBIR/STTR program can be found at www.sbir.gov/about/about-sbir

Each agency has its own SBIR and STTR policies and procedures, which change from time to time.  Thus, it’s best to consult with the funding agency for the rules and latest information regarding an agency’s SBIR or STTR grant program.  For convenience, we have aggregated the links to these programs, below.

SBIR-Participating Agencies

Each year, Federal agencies with extramural research and development (R&D) budgets that exceed $100 million are required to allocate 2.5 percent of their R&D budget to these programs. Currently, eleven Federal agencies participate in the program:

§ Department of Commerce - National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

STTR-Participating Agencies

Each year, Federal agencies with extramural research and development (R&D) budgets that exceed $1 billion are required to reserve 0.3% of the extramural research budget for STTR awards to small businesses. These agencies designate R&D topics and accept proposals. Currently, five agencies participate in the STTR program:

§ Department of Defense

§ Department of Energy

§ Department of Health and Human Services

§ National Aeronautics and Space Administration

§ National Science Foundation
