Tech transfer: Patents, start-ups, and technology licensing at Columbia
Orin Herskowitz, Executive Director of Columbia Technology Ventures (CTV), will share observations about the opportunities in and challenges of university tech transfer, both at Columbia and nationally at our peer institutions.
For those of you new to tech transfer, CTV at Columbia University is considered one of the leading technology transfer offices in the world, with more than 300 invention disclosures from faculty, 225 new patents, 50 license deals and 12 new start-ups each year, as well as approximately 45 multi-disciplinary, full-time staff across Columbia's two campuses. CTV currently has over 1200 patent assets available for licensing, across research fields such as bio, IT, cleantech, medical devices, nanotechnology, and material science. Revenues generated then flow back into Columbia, to be shared with the inventor, the inventor’s lab, the department, the school, and the University overall.
Columbia Technology Ventures has a particular focus on start-up companies. Over the years, CTV has launched over 100 companies based on Columbia's technologies, 70 of which are still active today. Of these 100+ companies, 33 were venture-backed, 13 have gone public, and 9 have been acquired.
About the Speaker:
Orin Herskowitz is the Vice President of Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer for Columbia Technology Ventures. Prior to joining Tech Ventures as Chief Operating Officer in early 2006, Orin spent seven years with the Boston Consulting Group's New York office and, before that, founded and managed a media services start-up company. Orin holds a BA from Yale University and an MBA from the Wharton School.
