DocuSign FAQ

Q: What is DocuSign?

A: DocuSign is a web-based electronic signature service currently being used by Columbia Technology Ventures to obtain signatures on documents and automatically circulate them once all parties have signed.

Q: Why use DocuSign?

A: Using DocuSign eliminates the need to manually sign and print, fax, scan and ship documents. This greatly improves the speed at which documents become fully signed and executed.

Q: How does it work?

A: Signatories will receive a web link from a Columbia Technology Ventures contract manager (typically the one you have been negotiating a document with) via DocuSign. The email will contain instructions and any important notes. Simply click on the web link to access the document where you will be prompted to enter information and your signature before submitting back to our office. Once all relevant parties have signed you will receive a notification email with an attached PDF copy of the fully-signed and executed document. Transaction complete!

Q: Can I sign from my phone or tablet device?

A: Yes, you can electronically sign documents conveniently from most phone and tablet devices including iPad, iPhone, Android phones, Windows 8 and Windows devices. Click here if you wish to download free mobile app for your device (not required).

Q: Do I need to create an account to sign documents?

A: No, you can access DocuSign without ever having to create an account or login. You simply access documents for signature using the web link sent by Columbia Technology Ventures via DocuSign.

Q: Are electronic signatures legally binding?

A: Yes, electronic signatures are just as legally binding as hand signatures on paper in the United States of America under the ESIGN Act of 2000 and for members of the European Union under Directive 1999/93.

Q: How secure is DocuSign?

A: Documents sent by Columbia Technology Ventures via DocuSign are hosted using secure cloud-based Digital Transaction Management (xDTM). DocuSign is also ISO 27001 and SSAE 16 certified and tested internationally. Furthermore, all documents are fully encrypted to ensure confidentiality of information as well as robust anti-tamper controls to prevent anyone from modifying documents.

Q: Can I still hand sign documents?

A: Yes, DocuSign allows you to print out documents and provides instructions for faxing back the hand signed copy of the document. This is not the default option, so please request this feature from your Columbia Technology Ventures contract manager.
